Licences

UK provisional licences are not valid for driving or hiring any vehicle in Greece. A moped needs at least a category A1 licence, and the UK category P licence is not valid.[1] Greek news reported in June 2026 that people renting a quad must have held a licence for five years, although the report did not give a start date, so check the current rules with the hire company.[2]

Helmets

Helmets are required on quad bikes and mopeds, and not wearing one may invalidate your insurance.[1] Greece also said rental firms may not supply motorcycles, scooters or quads without helmets.[2]

Insurance

Quad biking is often excluded from standard travel insurance, so you may need specific cover. Hire company insurance is usually third-party only, and you may be charged for damage to the vehicle.[1] Read what is covered before you pay.

Drinking

Never ride a quad or scooter after drinking. Police run checkpoints, and drink-driving is an offence.[3]

Before you hire

  • Take your licence and check it is valid for that vehicle.
  • Check the vehicle's condition, brakes and lights, and photograph any damage before you leave.
  • Ask what insurance is included and what you would pay in an accident.
  • Wear a helmet and sensible shoes, and do not carry more passengers than the vehicle allows.

If you only want to get around, taxis and your package transfers are simpler. See getting around Zante.
